Urban Fabric
The concept of urban fabric lacks a clear definition despite frequent mentions, yet urbanists agree on its main building blocks: plots, streets, constructed spaces, and open spaces, which form a cohesive whole. The map/model of Altstetten creatively translates these elements into repurposed textilia, resulting in a visible and tangible urban textile, which is portable and able to transform uncomfortable spaces fostering interaction and learning. Altstetten's identity lies in its diversity and coexistence of different scales, styles and cultures. Abandoned sites have always played significant roles in the district's history, contributing more to public areas' quality than politicians. While the eviction of the «Koch Areal» lamentably ended one of the city's vibrant spaces, we should reflect on the lessons this experiment offers and creatively adapt spaces in our cities, even with simple gestures like draping a blanket on a wall.
