Living Hall
The Badenerstrasse in Zurich is predominantly characterised by the block perimeter development. Hence to the polygonal plot and the existing structure, which features a second row in this location, the concept of an undirected and/or multi-oriented living emerged. To maximize the advantages of the plot and its various orientations, the living hall extends three times towards the facade within each dwelling. This arrangement allows each apartment to benefit from southern exposure, city views, and access to the courtyard. The central room, being spacious and open, creates an interesting contrast to the protected private rooms. These enjoy softer lighting compared to the well-lit main living space as the main windows are positioned at the extremities of the living hall transitioning into the smaller corner windows for the private chambers. The vast glazing allows to seamlessly blend the outdoors, indoors and transitional spaces - integrating the central room with its surrounding environment. The facade also responds to the neighbouring buildings, which are richly ornate by using exposed concrete to stay in the theme of natural stone, along with loggias that are perceived as reliefs while the roof dormer resembles the towers.
