Under The Bridge
Leftover or unuseless spaces are often overlooked and underdeveloped in urban areas. These spaces, which lack a clear purpose or monetary value, offer potential for biodiversity and experimentation. Swiss infrastructures have a profound impact on its surroundings, serving functional purposes while embodying national pride. One notable example is the Wipkingerviadukt in Zurich, which connects the main station to Oerlikon. To leverage the existing structures, the viaduct and the covered area beneath it are activated. The initial intervention involves creating a large exhibition hall directly below the viaduct, with flexible features such as curtains and elevator-like platforms to adapt to all kinds of different exhibitions. Narrow galleries encircle the space, and adjustable platforms offer versatile spatial possibilities. Adjacent to the hall, the existing workshop serves as storage space, featuring bathrooms and the wardrobe. Inside the massive bridge pillar, a WW II bunker is transformed into a bar that enhances the visitors and peoples experience, who gather along the river while strengthening the local history.
